They sweep your home network, map every device connected to it, and can capture microphone audio even when the screen appears to be powered off.
The findings, based on retail LG OLED models including the G5, paint a troubling picture of consumer electronics that prioritize data collection over user privacy. And the most disturbing part? Most of this happens silently, in the background, with no obvious indication that your TV is anything other than an innocent screen.
Network Sweeping: Your TV Is Mapping Your Home
Using Wireshark packet captures, the research team discovered that LG smart TVs continuously scan the local area network for other hardware. This isn't passive observation. The TVs actively probe for phones, smartwatches, tablets, and any other connected devices on your network.
The data collected includes internal IP addresses, device names, signal strengths of neighboring Wi-Fi networks, and even location data. All of this gets fed into LG Ad Solutions, the company's targeted advertising division, which claims access to 363 million secondary addressable devices in the United States alone. That means LG isn't just tracking your TV. They're tracking every device that shares a network with it.
With approximately 216 million smart TV sales globally, the scale of this data collection is staggering. Every LG TV becomes a surveillance node, silently cataloging the digital ecosystem of every household it enters.
Audio Capture While Apparently Off
Perhaps the most alarming discovery was that the tested LG TVs could capture clean microphone audio while in standby mode with the screen appearing to be powered down. The TV was listening, even when it looked like it wasn't.
When the researchers disconnected the TV from Ethernet, it continued recording audio locally, storing the files on the device. Once network access was restored, the TV uploaded the stored recordings. This means that even temporarily disconnecting your TV from the internet doesn't stop the data collection. It just delays the transmission.
This is not the first time smart TV audio collection has raised concerns, but the level of sophistication and persistence documented here goes well beyond previous disclosures. The TV isn't just responding to voice commands. It's continuously capturing audio and buffering it for upload.
Automated Content Recognition: Watching What You Watch
Beyond network scanning and audio recording, LG TVs run Automated Content Recognition (ACR) by default. ACR works by sampling on-screen audio and video, converting them into digital fingerprints, and logging what users watch across all inputs. Whether you're streaming from Netflix, playing a game console, or watching over-the-air broadcasts, the TV is fingerprinting your content.

Security Vulnerabilities in webOS
The researchers also documented remote code execution vulnerabilities in webOS, LG's smart TV operating system. But the combination of broad network listeners, active data sweeps, and exploitable vulnerabilities makes these TVs a serious security concern, not just a privacy one.
An attacker who exploits these vulnerabilities could potentially access the same data the TV is collecting — your network topology, connected devices, and possibly audio recordings. Your TV isn't just spying on you for advertising purposes. It could become a vector for malicious surveillance.
What You Can Do About It
The research team's recommendation was blunt: disconnect LG smart TVs from the internet entirely and use external streaming devices instead. Here's a more detailed breakdown of protective measures:
- Disconnect your TV from Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Use an Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, or other external streaming device for smart functionality.
- Disable ACR (Automated Content Recognition) in your TV's settings. Look for it under Settings > All Settings > General > About this TV > User Agreements or similar.
- Opt out of LG's targeted advertising and data collection agreements in the TV's settings.
- Disable voice control features if you don't use them. This reduces the risk of ambient audio capture.

The LG investigation is a microcosm of a much larger problem. The smart device industry has built an entire business model around surveillance-as-a-feature. Smart TVs are sold at thin margins, and manufacturers recoup costs through data collection and targeted advertising. The consumer pays for the device twice: once at checkout, and again with their privacy.
Regulatory frameworks like GDPR in Europe and the California Consumer Privacy Act offer some protections, but enforcement is slow and penalties are often treated as a cost of doing business. The FTC has taken action against smart TV manufacturers in the past, but the pace of innovation in data collection consistently outstrips regulatory responses.
There's also a fundamental design problem. Smart TVs are computers that happen to have screens, running operating systems with broad permissions and network access. Unlike your phone or laptop, where you can audit and control apps, TV operating systems are opaque. You can't easily see what's running, what data is being collected, or where it's being sent.
The Dumb TV Solution
For those serious about privacy, the most effective solution is also the simplest: treat your TV as a dumb display. Buy the best panel you can afford, never connect it to the internet, and use a dedicated streaming device that you can easily reset, replace, or audit. This approach sacrifices some convenience — no voice control, no built-in app updates — but eliminates the vast majority of data collection risk.
Alternatively, consider building a home theater PC or using an open-source media platform like Jellyfin or Plex on a device you control. These solutions give you smart TV functionality without surrendering your living room to a surveillance device.
LG has not commented on the investigation as of this writing. But the evidence is clear: your smart TV is doing a lot more than you think, and most of it isn't in your interest. It's time to start asking whether the convenience of a connected TV is worth the privacy you're giving up.
The era of trusting consumer electronics by default is over. Every device in your home that connects to the internet is a potential surveillance vector. The question isn't whether your devices are collecting data. The question is how much, what kind, and who's benefiting from it.
